December 26th 1979 – Queen, Hammersmith Odeon: Concert for the People of Kampuchea

Here I run out of superlatives: cannot explain how truly great this band were that night. Having seen them 20 times with Fred from 1975 onwards, I can say they always blew the place apart but this night was so special.

Fred was simply on fire.

At one point he had a fight with the monitors – really funny – during Sheer Heart Attack. Completely excessive and wonderful.

Fragments of memories remain: punishingly loud Echoplexed guitars, ricocheting off the back wall of the Odeon behind me, round and round the venue. Brian playing Three Blind Mice.  Fred singing upon the shoulders of Superman for We Will Rock You.  Audience spontaneously burst into a We Are The Champions football chant.

Have a look at this: it’s truly magical stuff.
